Metro Q1 07 Revenues Disappointing

Published on April 24, 2007 | Email this article

Net sales for Metro International increased 10 percent in the first quarter compared to the same quarter last year.

The company lost $11.5 million in the quarter, compared with $3.9 million in Q1 06, according to Editor & Publisher. While the first quarter is seasonally weak for Metro, Q1 07 was particularly disappointing because of lackluster performance in key markets such as Sweden, Spain, France and the U.S.

The U.S. in particular underperformed due to tough local market conditions.

Investments in online will help boost results later this year, the company believes.

The rise of free dailies such as Metro is putting pressure on paid dailies in cities like Boston and New York.
