In New York, March Madness Might Mean Soccer, Too

Published on March 19, 2007 | Email this article

An unusual version of March Madness has crept into New York TV circles, and it’s not for NCAA Basketball.

According to Nielsen Station Index (NSI) Local People Meter (LPM) figures, more New York TV viewers, regardless of language, watched the Super Clásico America vs. Guadalajara soccer match on Univision 41 (WXTV) than the day’s first NCAA Basketball game, University of Virginia vs. University of Tennessee, on WCBS-TV Channel 2 on Sunday, March 18.

More than 310,000 total persons watched the soccer game during an average quarter hour (AQH) basis on Univision 41 from 10 pm to midnight on March 18, while the Virginia vs. Tennessee basketball game was seen by only 293,000 persons on WCBS-TV from noon to 2:45 pm, despite the less fierce program competition earlier in the day, according to a Univision statement.
