Spending on all prescription drug brands will hit about $4.5 billion by the end of 2006, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

That marks another record year in advertising spending, topping last year’s spending by nearly 9 percent, writes Brandweek. Sepracor’s Lunesta insomnia drug will prove to be the biggest spender, most likely, spending $220 million on ads through Sept. of this year and marketing a 78 percent increase over last year.

Sanofi Aventis spend $135 million through Sept. on its own insomnia drug, Ambien CR. AstraZeneca’s Crestor increased spending by 15 percent over last year, as did Pfizer’s Viagra.
