Nielsen’s Whiting Takes No. 2 Slot at VNU

Published on December 18, 2006 | Email this article

VNU has announced details of its massive restructuring that will reduce its global workforce by 10 percent.

The restructuring will make Nielsen Media Research CEO Susan Whiting executive vice president of VNU, making her the No. 2 person at the company, and chairman of Nielsen Media Research, writes MediaPost. Whiting will report directly to David Calhoun, who was made CEO of VNU when the company was taken private by a group of private equity firms.
The 4,000-person reduction of the company’s workforce will reduce costs, and that savings will be reinvested into new Nielsen Media Research initiatives such as its Anytime/Anywhere, or A2/M2 program. Another initiative to benefit from the cuts is new unit NielsenConnect.
As Nielsen steps into a more central role within VNU, other areas such as trade publications become a smaller factor. VNU today confirmed, for example, that it has sold its European trade publications to a European private equity firm.
