Philly Inquirer, Daily News Unions Prepared to Strike

Published on November 30, 2006 | Email this article

Although there has been some last-minute progress, labor talks with the union of The Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News may go later than the deadline of 12:01 a.m.

The negotiations are the result of a threatened strike by nearly 1,000 advertising, editorial and circulation workers who are members of the Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia, writes the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Still to be settled are pay raises and the duration of contracts for the eight unions, and Joe Lyons, president of the council representing three Teamsters locals and six smaller newspaper unions is quoted as saying that there won’t be enough time to get it all done.

However, the unions he represents might be willing to extend the deadline if they believe a final settlement is close.

Leaders of the Guild, which is not part of Lyons’ council, said members were preparing to walk off the job as early as tonight.
