Shrinking

The AP reports that Tribune Company’s increased earnings came despite a revenue fall of one percent to $1 billion at its flagship publishing unit. Net income reached $231 million for the second quarter, up more than two-fold from last year’s $94 million. The company saw across-the-board circulation declines in its newspapers.

The company’s broadcasting and entertainment unit saw sales decline six percent, and its television revenues shrank by nine percent. Interestingly, the company partly blamed Nielsen Media Research’s local people meters for the broadcast losses, indicating the firm believed Nielsen is undercounting its minority audience component.
