The Houston Chronicle’s classified section, generally slow for help-wanted ads over the Labor Day weekend, doubled this year, mostly due to a new category for people looking for temporary jobs in the wake of the Katrina disaster, Editor & Publisher reports. The paper has also picked up display advertising from companies like Chevron and Exxon Mobil which are encouraging displaced employees to contact them.

With an estimated 100,000 evacuees in Houston, the Hearst-owned paper has been distributing 10,000 broadsheets to 25 Houston-area shelters. The broadsheets have fluctuated from six to eight pages and include information on how evacuees can locate friends and family members or find health assistance. Some 7,000 copies of the main newspaper are distributed along with the special editions.

Houston could potentially absorb tens of thousands of short-term or permanent residents; the Chronicle, which currently has a daily circulation of 527,744 according to the latest ABC figures, could easily produce another 50,000 to 100,000 copies to accommodate new readers, said Bill Offill, executive VP sales and marketing for the Chronicle.
