Total newspaper ad revenues, both print and online, showed a growth of 2.8 percent over last year, Mediapost reports, with some of the major newspaper chains reporting a drop in revenues in August compared to the same month last year.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel parent Chicago Journal Communications Inc., for example, said its August revenues dropped 3.2 percent; circulation revenues decreased 6.3 percent, while total advertising revenue remained static. Gannett’s national newspaper advertising revenue in August was down 8.2 percent.

The Newspaper Association of America released figures in August which showed that newspaper advertisers had increased their spending on newspapers by nearly 3 percent during Q2 2005, but most of that growth came from online newspaper advertising sales.
