Radio Disney kicked off its new station, AM 910 in Detroit, with a party at the Henry Ford Museum on October 5. At the party, Radio Disney awarded “Hometown Hero” certificates to children who have shown “extraordinary kindness and generosity to others.”

According to Radio Disney president and general manager Jean-Paul Colaco, 50 percent of Radio Disney listeners are in a car, the Detroit Free Press reports. That’s a main reason why Disney spent three years and unspecified dollars to expand into the Detroit market. Mike Fezzey, leader of Disney-owned WJR-AM (760) and head of 910, hopes that Detroit automakers hoping to reach children’s parents will pony up ad dollars for the station.

However, those potential advertisers shouldn’t expect top ratings. Arbitron measures listeners only over the age of 12; in Flint the station recently ranked 39th with a 0.1 share of the audience.

Governor Jennifer Granholm and Mickey Mouse were in attendance at the party.
