Spending for next year’s midterm election could reach as high as spending during the presidential election year of 2004, a lofty $1.7 billion, AdAge writes. This year’s election has already broken records for an off year, at $515 million.

The big-state governor races - Minnesota, Texas, New York, California, and Illinois - are expected to fuel the increase, along with some U.S. Senate races. President Bush’s tarnishing image may also increase the number of competitive congressional districts, according to Evan Tracey, chief operating officer of TNS Media Intelligence Campaign Media Analysis Group.
