New Harvard Alumni Mag Launches Next Year

A new glossy “fan” magazine for Harvard alumni is launching next year and, according to the Boston Globe, “it’s hard to see who would want to read this one, apart from the not-inconsiderable universe of narcissistic Harvard graduates.” However, The Atlantic publisher David Bradley is building the publication, which may give it some steam. Currently the magazine, titled 02138, has a handful of staffers at The Atlantic’s current offices in Boston.

The Atlantic will soon be moving to Washington, D.C.

Bradley is quoted as saying that he is involved in 02138 because of his respect for founder Bom Kim. The new magazine will include features on the questions confronting the university and the Harvard community, such as how being an alum may hurt an offspring’s chances of admission and why Harvard money managers earned their lavish pay.

The tone - at least of the website - is competitive and slightly smug. For example, one feature in the upcoming magazine will be the “Harvard Business School Top 30 Under 30” or the richest HBS alumni under age 30 which, according to the site, “you can use as a yardstick (or a whipping post).”
