MySpace Feels Success and Burden of High Traffic

Published on February 14, 2006 | Email this article

The top social-networking site MySpace has grown to over 54 million users since its debut in 2004, attracting 2 1/2 times the traffic of Google Inc. and complaints that some site members are using MySpace to cause harm, reports Yahoo News. The free, ad-supported site allows registered users to personalize their profile features, upload photos, message friends, and update an online journal.

In one day, MySpace gets as many as 180,000 new users. As the network of members increases, so does the value of the service, inspiring MySpace owners to offer more features. With the growing success of the site, MySpace has started its own record label, plans to expand internationally, and hopes to offer services to filmmakers, comedians and fashion designers.

MySpace has recently had to address the worries of parents, schools and law enforcement officials that the site is exposing users - one forth of which are minors - to danger. The site is suffering a drop in advertising and the backlash of allegedly being connected with the murder case of a young girl. The validity of users profile information is also cause for concern.
