Spanish-Language Newspaper Publisher Deported

Cecilia Velazquez, the publisher of the Missouri Spanish-language newspaper Red Latina (meaning “Latin network”), said Saturday she would continue working even though she was deported back to Mexico after a five-year legal struggle over her immigration status, Yahoo writes.

Velazquez - also the president of Radio CuCui, which brings performers and commentators to St. Louis radio station WEW-AM - will not be allowed back in the U.S. for 10 years, said Carl Rusnok, Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency spokesman.

“We are the voice of my population. They need to know what’s going on,” said Velazquez. “I know we can do it. I have the internet and my cell phone. I can make all the meetings. We need to tell the people ‘Don’t be afraid. Don’t be scared. I’ll be back.’”
