MediaNews Group Inc., along with publishing company Hearst Corp., will pay $1 billion in cash to acquire four newspapers - the Contra Costa Times, the San Jose Mercury News, the Monterey County Herald and the St. Paul Pioneer Press - from The McClatchy Co., writes Yahoo.

MediaNews has had its eye on the four papers currently owned by Knight Ridder Inc. - which has been bought out by McClatchy - to strengthen its presence in northern California, where it currently owns several San Francisco Bay Area papers.

“These were the newspapers that excited us the most about Knight Ridder,” said William Dean Singleton, head of Denver-based MediaNews.

When the deal closes, MediaNews will become the nation’s fourth-largest newspaper company, based on circulation, with 53 daily newspapers contributing to an overall 2.7 million daily circulation.
