DirecTV Debuts First Network Devoted to Babies

Published on May 11, 2006 | Email this article

DirecTV yesterday morning announced its new 24-hour network BabyFirstTV, which caters to kids aged 6 months to 3 years and will not be supported by advertising, Mediaweek writes.

The network’s target market is subject to controversy, as the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limited television exposure for kids under two years of age. Network supports said it fosters interaction between kids and parents.

The baby network is a joint venture between Regency Enterprises - a TV production company allied with Fox Entertainment - and Los Angeles-based private investment fund Bellco Capital. The satellite company will offer BabyFirstTV for $9.99 per month and may add it to a digital cable package sometime soon.

According to the BabyFirstTV website (“the nation’s first channel for babies!”), the channel offers 24/7 DVD-quality programs with “a unique parent co-viewing experience.”
