London Freesheet to Compete with ‘Evening Standard,’ ‘Metro’

The free London afternoon paper launching in September is part of a blueprint for a national strategy, according to publisher News International, Brand Republic reports. The paper debuts on September 18, with hand distribution of between 300,000 and 400,000 outside commuter points in London.

This distribution strategy will set up a battle with the paid Evening Standard.

But according to News International Free Newspapers’ general manager Ian Clark, the publisher plans to expand the strategy to other cities with regional editions in the hopes of competing successfully against the morning free paper Metro. Metro expects to make 10 million pounds profit this year, the article states.

Metro New York launch editor will edit the new paper, called thelondonpaper.
