Baltimore Sun Plans Ads for Front Sections

Published on August 03, 2006 | Email this article

Following a trend to help boost decreasing revenues, The Baltimore Sun will begin placing ads on front sections of its newspaper.

Editor Timothy Franklin and Managing Editor Robert Blau, announced in a memo to employees that The Sun would be placing ads on front sections such as the Business and Sports sections, however it will not have ads on Page 1, The Baltimore Sun reports.

John Patinella, general manager and senior vice president of The Sun, said the section front pages will be “premium positions,” able to command higher rates than spots inside. The start date for section front ads may begin as soon as September.

Several newspapers have begun to change ad layouts to attract more advertisers. Monday, The LA Times announced it would run ads on its section fronts. The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal all recently announced that they would also make the transition to section front ads. The Journal has even placed the ads on Page 1, which is not unheard of across Europe. USA Today already places ads along the bottom of its front page.
