General Motors Considers Changing Logo Color to Green

Published on July 08, 2009

GM may change the background color of its corporate logo from blue to green in an effort to show consumers that it is “leaner and greener,” more focused on fuel efficiency and more nimble.

Though no decision has been made on the logo change, there will be some management and cultural changes, according to an AP article. New CEO Fritz Henderson will cut another 4,000 white-collar jobs, including 450 executive-level employees such as plant managers or engineering group heads.

General Motors is also expected to focus more on developing smaller vehicles. The auto maker could announce a subcompact car to be built at a Michigan factory, widely believed to be the four-seat Chevrolet Spark minicar now being sold in China.

There also has been some speculation as to whether GM will move ahead with its Chevy Volt plans. However, GM recently announced that it has plans to build a future small car in the United States using an idled UAW-GM facility, adding to its portfolio of U.S.-built, highly fuel-efficient cars including the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt.

Earlier in the year, GM announced its commitment to meeting new fuel efficiency standards of 35 miles per gallon by 2020.

Despite being in bankruptcy protection, General Motors has said that it will not cut ad spending any more than it already has. The company cut its spending by 15% last year, from $2.49 billion in 2007 to $2.11 billion, and went from being the second biggest advertiser in the country (behind Procter & Gamble) to the third biggest (just after Verizon). But the company says that, for the next few months, at least, it will spend $50 million per month on advertising.
